As a composer and multi-instrumentalist myself, Trumpet master Doc Severinsen, has been a tremendous influence on my early years. I listened to his many recordings during my classical and jazz studies on trumpet all through high school. His technical ability is outstanding and can effortlessly play all styles of music from intense classical, swinging big band lead trumpet jazz, stratospheric high notes, Tom Scott contemporary charts and Henry Mancini ballads with a tone of beauty unmatched.
Although there are many great trumpet players I respect who can play high, movie scores, classical, lead trumpet and soft ballads, none of them can do it all with such great precision, control and feeling. Only Doc. That makes him as Johnny Carson said, “The greatest trumpet player in the world.”
At 90, he is still performing concerts and inspiring young musicians. I met and spoke with Doc twenty years ago backstage at a Milwaukee Symphony concert he conducted. He is a witty and kind gentleman who still talks about practicing the Arban book and trying different mouthpieces. He has achieved mastery in his field.
Dear Doc, I wanted to show my appreciation for all that you’ve done to inspire my musical career, so I composed and arranged this piece for you. I entitled it, “Waltz for Doc,” I performed the solo on my original Getzen Eterna Severinsen model trumpet.
I hope you like it, in celebration of your 91st birthday next month,
Here’s to you Doc,
With much love,
Darryl John Kennedy
